NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 2 – The Office Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who has been providing intergovernmental leadership and coordination of drought response has reported that donations made towards drought mitigation as at Dec 1 stands at Sh542,029,588.20.
Those who have wired their donations to the drought appeal fund so far include Kenya China Economic and Trade Association sh 10 million, Cooperative Bank sh 150 million, Kenya Defense Forces sh 130 million, Dawoodi Bohri sh 10 million , Diamond Trust Bank sh 20 million, Kenya Commercial Bank sh 100 million, Equity Bank sh 120 million, Middle East Bank sh 2 million and sh 29,588 in other deposits.
Last week DP Gachagua shared a pay bill number on his social media pages, and asked Kenyans willing to contribute cash to the appeal fund so as to assist those affected by the ongoing drought.
The pay bill number he issued is 880990 and one uses their name as the account number.
Donations can also be made through KCB account 1305486137, Riverside Branch.
The Drought Response Committee is chaired by Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa, and appointed by President William Ruto.
The 14-member team which brings together CEOs of various leading private institutions among them banks, have been mandated to establish a private sector -led drought mitigation appeal fund, under the auspices of Kenya Red Cross.
Those listed in the committee include James Mwangi (Equity Bank CEO),Nasim Devji (Diamond Trust Bank CEO), Shamaz Savani (African Corporation Bank CEO), Paul Russo (KCB Group CEO), Rebecca Mbithi (Family Bank CEO), Jane Karuku (EABL CEO), Joshua Chepkwony (Jamii Telecommunication CEO) and Crispin Acholla (CEO British American Tobacco).
Others are Asha Mohammed (Secretary General, the Kenya Red Cross), Edwin Mukabana (Kenya Bus Management CEO), Patricia Ndegwa (Impact Philanthropy Africa), Krishma Chavda (ISHA foundation) and Hared Hassan from the National Drought Management Authority.
The President also appointed Murimi Murage of the Office of the Deputy President as the Secretary to the committee.
The team will be reporting to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
