NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 9 – A Facebook page purporting to dish out loans of up to Sh56,000 in under five minutes is fake and does not represent the micro-lender it alleges to represent.

The account registered under the loan service category shared a loan offer post alongside contacts the page alleged belonged to Tala agents, the mobile lender said to have been offering the loans in question.

The contacts shared did not however match verified contacts on caller identity application Truecaller. Further the page in question with just over 180 followers and 131 page likes did not have reviews.

A further review of the account revealed that its first publicly available post, equally a fake loan offer, was posted on October 3, 2022, a sharp contrast with the lender’s official page created in July 2014 and which has shared hundreds of posts since.

This fact check established the lender’s official page, which is also verified, had over 700,000 followers and was liked by nearly an equal number of facebook accounts.

Loan offers made on the page with 180 followers are fake.
