NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 22 – President William Ruto has said he will not be drawn in discussion of past and future elections, saying his current focus is service delivery.
Speaking during the launch of the Nairobi Rivers Commission on Wednesday in Korogocho, the President told off Azimio leader Raila Odinga of his mass action threats, saying no amount of threats will distract him from delivering for Kenyans.
The President was responding to Raila who issued a 14 day ultimatum to hold countrywide protests, if the government doesn’t address a number of grievances raised by the opposition, including lowering the cost of living.
“Don’t start asking us about 2027 elections which are five years away, for now we want to talk about issues concerning these citizens until we get to that day,” the President stated.
The President however cautioned that he will not allow anyone to break the law in the name of ‘mass action’, and that the rule of law and constitutionalism will prevail.
At the same time the President reiterated that he will work for all Kenyans without discrimination, noting that elections are now behind.
“Kenya is governed by the rule of law and nobody is going to threaten Kenyans with impunity. Everybody must respect the law, everybody will obey and respect the constitution,” he stated.
During a prayer meeting held at the Jevanjee Gardens in Nairobi, Odinga demanded that President- Ruto’s administration which he terms ‘illegitimate’ to reduce the cost of living and halt the IEBC hiring process in14 days.
This includes restoring food and fuel subsidies which were removed after the President said they were unsustainable.
“Azimio will mobilize mass action if they fail, and there will be no turning back.Ruto, your time is up. Deliver for the people or face the consequences,” Odinga said during the meeting attended by hundreds of Azimio supporters.
