NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 28 – iXAfrica Data Centres, East Africa’s largest hyperscale data centre provider, has launched the first phase of its state-of-the-art facility, NBOX1, in Nairobi.
The 4.5MW, 780-rack carrier-neutral and AI-ready data centre expands access to cloud services, secure data storage, and reliable connectivity for businesses, tech providers, and government institutions.
Part of a larger 22.5MW campus along Mombasa Road, the facility is designed to meet increasing data and computing demands with seamless connectivity through multiple network providers.
Speaking during a visit to the facility, Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest) CEO John Mwendwa emphasized iXAfrica’s role in strengthening Kenya’s data sovereignty and accelerating digital transformation.
“Kenya is on the brink of a digital revolution, and investments like iXAfrica’s hyperscale data centre are crucial in positioning the country as a premier technology and innovation hub,” said Mwendwa.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment and supporting investments that drive economic growth.
iXAfrica CEO Snehar Shah highlighted the facility’s role in meeting the region’s growing demand for cloud and AI infrastructure.
“Our hyperscale data centre is ready to host key public sector workloads in the East African Community (EAC) region while driving cloud adoption and digital transformation,” Shah said.
In December 2022, Helios Investment Partners committed an initial $50 million in growth capital to support the facility’s development.
Beyond infrastructure, iXAfrica is enhancing Kenya’s data security landscape and has partnered with Moringa School to offer specialized training programs for corporate Data Protection Officers.
