NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 13 – Embattled Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni now says that the Azimio Coalition will strip nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege of the National Assembly Minority Whip position.
Speaking during Azimio Rally, Kioni said the Jubilee Party and the Azimio coalition will not give House leadership positions to leaders who have chosen to betray the Party by joining forces with the Kenya Kwanza Government.
Sabina Chege is among the over 30 MPs who broke ranks with the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya and joined hands with the President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance following a meeting at State House Nairobi on Wednesday.
“That position we had given to Sabina to be our whip at the National Assembly it is no longer hers. These members of Parliament who are here should ensure that once the House resumes on Tuesday, Sabina is de-whipped,” Kioni said.
Kioni, whose position in the party remains unclear after he was suspended by a section of lawmakers on Friday, refuted claims that the former ruling party had joined forces with the Kenya Kwanza.
On Friday, Jubilee Party initiated the process of exiting the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya within a period of six months.
Jubilee was part of the larger Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance that ran against President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance in the August 2022 polls.
In a resolution reached by the party’s top organ, the political party is expected to hold a special delegates convention to ratify the decision.
The simmering battle for the control of Jubilee Party by both Kenya Kwanza Alliance and Azimio La Umoja One Kenya ensued with the latter allies being suspended from the political outfit.
The party’s national executive committee suspended Vice Chair David Murathe, the secretary general Jeremiah Kioni and national treasurer Kagwe Gichochi.
“The National Executive Committee engages with the ruling coalition on the possibility of creating a working cooperation arrangement with it,” the NEC resolutions stated.
This will give a nod for the political outfit sign a cooperation working agreement with Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Kioni, whose position in the party remains unclear, refuted claims that the former ruling party had joined forces with the Kenya Kwanza and asserted that he is still the Jubilee Party Secretary General dismissing a leadership coup on Friday as futile.
