NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 13 – Medics allied to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) in Nairobi held a protest at City Hall, demanding for National Hospital Insurance Fund cover for all Nairobi County workers.
According to KMPDU Nairobi, Branch Secretary Malindi Chao, Governor Johnson Sakaja should intervene and give a way forward on the matter as the medics are always putting their lives at risk.
“All health workers in Nairobi, all of them don’t have insurance so you can imagine how we have been pushed too far if anything happens here, we don’t know what to do,” he stated.
Chao further called on President William Ruto to break his silence over the issue concerning health cover for all medics.
“We are asking Mr president to say something, we hustlers are suffering from this issue concerning health cover we are being deducted every month, we don’t want any other insurance cover we only want NHIF comprehensive insurance cover what NHIF wants is proper and timely payment of premiums.”
He explained that they have not been able to access the NHIF comprehensive insurance cover because the county failed to make proper and timely payments of premiums.
He stated that working without insurance cover exposes doctors to risks of communicable diseases.
“Some doctors have been retained in hospitals because of a bill they cannot afford to pay ”we are telling Sakaja we only want one thing simple comprehensive cover we don’t want anything else apart from the cover.”
