NAIROBI, Kenya May 11 – Lands and Physical Planning Principal Secretary Generali Nixon Korir has held a meeting with leaders from Tana River County to start the process of setting up technical committees to fast-track titling programmes.

The meeting resolved to form a two-tiered committee operating at both the national level and county level.

At the national level, the PS will chair a team comprising of the Directors of relevant departments, the Governor and legislators.

At the County level, the County Commissioner will chair a team that will include community representatives, the County Assembly and representatives of group ranches which will map out areas in the County that have no disputes and can thus get the green light for titling.

Today’s meeting was a follow-up to a visit to Tana River County by Lands Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Njeru, the PS, the National Land Commission and the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Lands in March.

PS Korir urged the leaders to take the initiative to resolve any disputes that hamper the issuing of title deeds.

“We should not be talking the same issue 5 years to come because the squatters will have doubled by then. Political leaders agree with the community on areas where there are no disputes for my State Department to issue the title deeds as promised the Tana River people,” said Korir.

Senator Mungatana said they have resolved to lead from the front and ensure that locals are issued with title deeds.

“We want to make sure that as many titles are issued to the residents of Tana River in the shortest time possible,” said the Senator.

Garsen MP Ali Wario said,the majority of the land of the county is free of disputes and the titling process should be started as soon as possible.

“In my Constituency almost 90 percent of the land has no disputes and I see no reason to slow down the process once we begin,” said the Garsen MP.

Bura MP Yakub Adow said the process should be inclusive and should include all communities.

Other leaders who attended the meeting include Senator Danson Mungatana, Garsen MP Ali Wario, Bura MP Yakub Adow, Galole MP Said Hiribae, Women Rep Amina Dika and former Governor Hussein Dado as well as several officials from the Tana River County Government.
