NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 30 – Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has proposed a new initiative wherein residents would contribute one 90 kg bag of maize annually in return for enrollment in the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Addressing residents at a free medical camp in Namanjala, the Governor noted that the proposal aims to relieve residents of the substantial financial challenges of accessing healthcare without proper medical coverage.
“That’s why I am proposing a unique barter system: one 90-kilogram bag of maize for annual NHIF cover. This aims to shield our residents from the financial burden of healthcare, preventing illness from pushing them into poverty,” the Governor said.
Governor Natembeya’s proposal follows his recent call for boda boda riders to enroll in NHIF coverage as part of an initiative that could extend universal health coverage to all residents in the county.
“My initiative is to ensure Universal health coverage for all Trans Nzoia residents,” the Governor stated.
Governor Natembeya further encouraged residents to proactively utilize nearby healthcare facilities, emphasizing the importance of regular medical checkups for early detection of illnesses.
This, he noted, would enable them to promptly implement preventive measures.
“Early detection and preventive measures are crucial for long-term health. I encourage everyone to utilize public health facilities not just for treatments, but also for regular checkups,” he stated.
