NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 5 – A man was stabbed to death and his wife seriously injured during a confrontation with gangsters at their home in the Kenyan capital on Sunday night.
The five gun men had raided the man’s house in Huruma estate where they engaged the couple in a violent confrontation.
Police said the man was stabbed in the head and died of excessive bleeding.
"His wife was rushed to hospital with serious stab wounds sustained during the incident. She is in a stable condition," Kasarani divisional Police Jasper Ombati said.
He told Capital News that no suspect had been arrested "but officers are trying to trace them."
"We are made to understand the gang is part of notorious burglars in this region," he said.
In a separate incident, a man described as a ‘dangerous’ criminal was gunned down after a shootout that lasted close to an hour.
The gangster was shot dead in Nairobi’s Bahati estate after police flushed him out of a residential house where he had sought refuge.
The man in his mid twenties had allegedly committed a robbery in Makongeni, a neighbouring estate which is notorious for burglaries before he fled to Bahati.
With the help of area residents, police pursuing the gangster were directed to his hideout.
Efforts by the police to persuade him to surrender were fruitless, forcing them to lob tear gas into the house.
It was only then that he opened the door while brandishing a gun which he directed at the police before gun fire rented the air.
It is not clear whether he fired a shot but police announced he was killed after a shootout, sparking protests from dozens of curious onlookers.
"He was armed and dangerous, he engaged us in a gun fire before he was felled," Buru Buru divisional Police chief Kipkemoi Rop said.
Another officer who participated in the mid-morning search told Capital News a pistol recovered from the slain thug was not loaded, raising fears he may have been executed.
