NAIROBI, Kenya, August 21, 2026 – Defending champions Muthaiga Golf Club shot into an early lead on Day One of the Patron’s Cup on home soil on Friday.
The team sat perched on top of the Trophy Division standings with 41 points, 18 better than second-placed VetLab Sports Club (23.5 points) and way ahead of Kenya Railways (10.5 points).
The result followed a round of foursome golf involving 13 flights in which two members from each team were pitted against each other.
Teeing off proceedings at 7:20 am were Muthaiga’s Bo Ciera and Daniel Kiragu taking to the course against Railway’s Morgan Chirchir and Onassis Ndegwa — the former winning by 6 holes ahead, with four left to play.
Also key to Muthaiga’s blissful start to the competition were Bhavnish and Neer Chandaria who outclassed VetLab’s Ebill Omollo and J. Mugo, Jay Sandhu/Quram Bhattii who beat Mikael Kihara (Jnr)/Chrispine Owuor, also of VetLab, as well as Kushil Nathwani/Benson Murimi who edged past Railway’s Japhet Momanyi and Saluni Meely.
Meanwhile, in the Shield category, Sigona Golf Club garnered 37.5 points to top the leaderboard on Day One, ahead of Thika Sports Club (25 points) and Nyali Golf and Country Club (12.5 points) in second and third respectively.
Golf Park Club were heads and shoulders above their opponents in the Plaque division, courtesy of 30.5 points.
In second were Kiambu Golf Club (24 points) as Royal Nairobi lag a close behind with 20.5 points.
Ascending to the top of the Bowl category were Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club with 36 points, ahead of Limuru Golf Club (21 points) and Karen Country Club (nine points) in second and third.
Ruiru Sports Club top the Mug category with 38 points, as Eldoret Club sit second with 18, ahead of third-placed Kericho Golf Club who boast 10 points.
The competition, held annually in honour of former president Mwai Kibaki, continues tomorrow at the same venue with another day of foursome golf.
Each team that finishes third in their division will be relegated to that below them whereas those that top their category earn a promotion to the next tier.
