Global Trade Center (GTC), Nairobi’s architectural gem, has recently opened its doors to a visually arresting gallery that takes visitors on an enthralling journey through the evolution of Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi.
The gallery, inaugurated on Friday 10th November, boasts an impressive collection of over 500 images, providing a captivating narrative of Nairobi’s rich history from the 1800s to its vibrant modern era.
The launch ceremony was graced by high-profile dignitaries, including the Principal Secretary for Culture, the Arts, and Heritage, Ummi Mohamed Bashir, who commended the towers for creating a historical and cultural archive that allows us to cherish the city and the country’s rich heritage.
Representing Governor Johnson Sakaja, Nairobi County CECM for Inclusivity, Public Participation, and Public Service, Dr. Anastasia Nyalita, emphasized the gallery’s importance for the county, stating, “The gallery beautifully showcases the remarkable transformation of Nairobi while preserving our rich history. This launch aligns perfectly with the vibrant and dynamic spirit of our city.
The unique gallery, strategically placed within the towers, the GTC Mall, and various key locations within, celebrates Nairobi’s creative economy and serves as a platform for recognizing and rewarding talented photographers inspired by luminaries such as Mo Amin.
The gallery is not only a testament to Nairobi’s transformation but also a result of an online photo competition that garnered thousands of submissions. Winners, selected through a combination of expert judgment and public voting, were awarded high-end prizes, including cameras and mobile phones.
Mr. Gong Yuxian, the General Manager of Avic International, the developers of GTC, highlighted the choice of the gallery’s location, emphasizing Nairobi’s rich history that deserves documentation. “The success of this gallery owes much to the enthusiastic participation and dedication of the contestants in the online photo campaign, which resonated widely with the public. We are also grateful to our partners for their support,” he noted.
GTC, positioned in Nairobi’s prime location, stands as a city landmark, comprising a 603-ft office tower, the prestigious JW Marriott Luxury 5-Star Hotel, an opulent apartment community, and a boutique mall. The gallery launch is a prelude to the opening of the JW Marriott Hotel, East Africa’s newest Luxury 5-Star Hotel, anticipated by the end of the year.
“We encourage more and more visitors to explore the gallery and gain a deeper appreciation of Nairobi’s rich history. That’s precisely why we established it in public spaces,” said Mr. Gong Yuxian, inviting everyone to witness the unique blend of Nairobi’s past and present within the walls of the towers.
