NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 18 – The ongoing Nairobi Festival at the city’s Uhuru Park recreational grounds will screen World Cup Finals between France and Argentina as the week-long inaugural event comes to an end.
The festival which kicked off on December 12 was billed as a talent development platform for the city’s youth. It sought to provide young people with a platform to market their products and therefore advance economic empowerment.
While extending an invitation to city resident to attend the closing event, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja promised to support 40 children homes in upcoming holiday season.
Sakaja was set to give prizes, particularly for the Nganya Awards, which target the creative public transport industry known fro muscic and graffiti.
“Come let’s watch the World Cup finals together at Uhuru Park as we close the Nairobi Festival. Amazing fireworks show after plus Nganya awards, Christmas tree and support to 40 children’s homes for the festive season,” stated the tweet.
The event’s objective is to celebrate Nairobi as a creative hub while at the same time identifying and developing local talent.
Sakaja had stated that the event was a chance for the young people to pursue economic opportunities through various talents.
“We have been able to do this because of the amazing potential the creative economy has. When we were campaigning, we spoke about the city of order, dignity, hope and opportunities and this is part of the opportunities we want to showcase and provide for our young people,” he said.
“We have a huge creative economy and more than 100 artists came for auditions of the upcoming artists also. We are going to showcase more than 16 films and documentaries short by our young people in Nairobi, the traders will also come and show what they have and we have a whole bunch of activities that will happen in Uhuru Park.”
