BUNGOMA, Kenya, Feb 1 – President William Ruto has assured Nzoia sugar farmers in Bungoma that they would receive their payments within the next two days.

During a meeting with the Nzoia Sugar Company farmers on Thursday, Ruto pledged to resolve the long-standing issue of the company’s outstanding debts.

Addressing the gathering, Ruto vowed to clear the company’s debts, which amount to Sh1.7 billion, and ensure that all farmers receive their dues. He expressed his commitment to finding a lasting solution for Nzoia Sugar Company, a challenge that previous administrations had struggled to address.

“We have calculated a Sh1.7 billion debt, and when I leave this place in the next two days, all farmers will have received their money,” Ruto declared.

The Deputy President stressed the importance of establishing effective management for Nzoia Sugar Company, emphasizing the need for timely payments to farmers and workers. He also proposed the distribution of dividends ranging from Sh300 million to Sh500 million annually, either to the county government or directly to the farmers.

Ruto affirmed that Nzoia Sugar Company would remain under public ownership and would not be privatized or sold to any entity. He underscored the government’s willingness to allocate additional funds to support cane development, recognizing it as vital to the company’s success.

Moses Wetangula, the Speaker of the National Assembly, urged leaders in Bungoma County to prioritize unity and avoid engaging in divisive politics. He called for cooperation among farmers, workers, and leaders within the Nzoia community, urging them to stand together and remain committed to the company’s success.

“I will never let you down, neither shall I lead you astray, mislead you, nor abandon you,” Wetangula assured the gathering.
