NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 23 – A police officer has been found guilty of demanding a Sh1 million bribe from a Chinese in order to discharge him.
The officer corporal Julius Onyango Ouma was also found guilty of concealing Sh200,000 he had received as a bribe.
His colleague Charles Macharia Wanjiru was also found guilty of obstructing and being violent at the scene where corporal Oguma received a bribe at Kabete police station.
Trial magistrate Thomas Nzioka however acquitted two police officers Yunah Kukhuvilo and Joseph King’ara Gatecha for lack of evidence.
The court said the two convicts after committing the offence on the particular date disappeared from the scene until a senior at the police station intervened and sermoned the two to the station.
It was the prosecution evidence that corporal Oguma demanded the money from Pan Xido Yun to release Gong Huan whom he had arrested and threatened to charge him with an offence of being in the country unlawfully.
The court was further informed that it took the intervention from officers of EACC to cause the arrest of corporal Oguma.
The officers brought in treated money in the sum of Ksh. 100,000 which was dully given to the officer at the parking area of Kabete police station.
It was further submitted to the court that after the arrest of corporal Oguma the money was not found.
