NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 14 – The Director of Public Prosecutions has applied to have fugitive murder suspect Kevin Kang’ethe, who is wanted for murder in the US, detained at Industrial Area Remand Prison and not a police station.
Prosecuting Counsel Vincent Monda told the court on Wednesday that the fugitive should be in prison pending his extradition proceedings because he has proved that he can escape from the police cells.
Kinyanjui was re-arrested on Tuesday night in Ngong after escaping from MuthaIga Police station on February 7 when his lawyer visited him.
The court will rule on the DPP’s application later Wednesday afternoon even as his lawyers insist he should be held at a police station because he has not been charged.
His extradition proceedings are scheduled for a hearing on Monday to determine if he should be sent to the US to face charges for the murder of his girlfriend in October last year.
Kang’ethe’s escape from Muthaiga police station on February 7 had shocked many, including US authorities who had lauded police for apprehending him having escaped from America where he was wanted in Massachusetts for killing his girlfriend identified as Margaret Mbitu on October 31, 2023.
Kang’ethe escaped when a lawyer visited him at Muthaiga Police Station and was allowed to speak to him, only to walk away prompting an unsuccessful chase by police officers.
The lawyer and four police officers who were on duty were later arrested.
