NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 6- Opposition leader Raila Odinga has intensified calls for the resignation of the Kenya Kwanza administration, maintaining that it is in office illegally despite having won last year’s election.
Odinga unsuccessfully challenged the August 9 presidential election at the Supreme Court, but he seems to have re-ignited himself, declaring his vote was stolen.
The evidence he presented at the Supreme Court in his challenge was described by judges as ‘hot air’.
“Our stand remains that Ruto didn’t win the election. He goes to State House by hijacking and subverting the will of the people. He must get out,” Odinga told a huge crowd at his traditional stronghold of Kibera.
“As if subverting the will of the people is not bad enough, he has proceeded to govern with absolute contempt for the people and our institutions,” he added.
Odinga, who spoke at the rally on Sunday on returning from his trips in Senegal and Nigeria, laid down several reasons why President Ruto “has to go.”
He insists he won the 2022 Presidential election but the electoral commission denied him the victory, instead giving it to Ruto.
“Tax cheats and criminals are with Ruto in his government. He is pretending to be looking for criminals outside his government,” he said in reference to a crackdown on high profile individuals on taxes–including immediate former president Uhuru Kenyatta, members of his family and senior officials who served in his government.
“Ruto promised a poor man’s government only to unveil a billionaire’s government that has no room for the poor and is now harassing innocent Kenyans, including the former president on taxes.”
He has vowed to hold countrywide rallies against Ruto’s government.
