NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 7 – Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has been re-elected as the representative for the Africa Bloc on the Representative Committee at the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC).
During his second-term election, Speaker Wetangula emphasized that his re-election is a testament to the trust placed in his leadership by fellow Commonwealth speakers.
“This second term marks my unwavering commitment to the development of our continent, a commitment solidified during the Africa Region Geo-Political meeting at the sidelines of the 27th My re-selection reflects the trust my fellow Speakers within the Commonwealth region have in my leadership and service delivery,” he stated.
Wetangula has pledged to strengthen unity and address common challenges faced by legislatures in Africa.
“Collaborating with counterparts in the Committee, I pledge to dedicate my time to addressing the common challenges faced by our people, including climate change effects, legislation affecting Africa, and the pursuit of unity in the region,” he assured.
In his address at the conference, the Speaker emphasized the critical role that parliaments play in combatting climate change, particularly in the global south, which bears the brunt of its effects despite contributing less to the problem.
He stressed the need for parliaments to bolster their efforts by providing mentorship, education, and financial support to members of parliament, enabling them to better understand the complexities of climate change.
“We need to constantly equip and support our members of parliament through workshops, research, and adequate financing for them to keep abreast of matters related to the environment,” he emphasized.
