NAIROBI, July 28 – Four suspects believed to be accomplices in the gang-rape of five Dutch women in Kakamega last Thursday have been arrested, Police said Monday.
Western Provincial Police chief Francis Munyambu said the suspects were being questioned in connection with the attack, where a gang of ten men raided a school where the women were sleeping and assaulted them.
“Those arrested included two guards who were on duty, the women’s driver and a tour guide,” Munyambu said.
The women are aged between 17 and 26, and reports indicate that they are in the country to put up a children’s home at the Lutonyi area, where the attack occurred.
“They were attacked at night as they slept within the school compound,” said the police chief.
“Those who participated in the actual act are still at large but we are following very crucial leads. Those in custody are accomplices. They are really assisting us,” said Munyambu, adding that they would be arraigned in court soon.
The guards told police that they were tied up and threatened with death before the gang stormed the house in which the Dutch women were sleeping.
The Dutch nationals were robbed of their satellite phones, laptops, cameras, money and other valuables.
Earlier this month, a Canadian couple on a charity mission in the volatile Mount Elgon region was attacked and robbed.
70-year-old John Bergen and his wife Eloise, 65, were attacked and robbed on July 9.
The Canadian couple had travelled to Kenya in March and have been carrying out charity work in the volatile region.
They have been receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital and were due to fly back to their country late Monday.
And just like the incident in Kakamega, two guards were arrested over the attack on the Canadians.
“In both attacks, guards are involved. That is why they are being detained to give information,” Munyambu said.
