NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 3 – The Energy and Interior Ministries are set to assess all Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country following the Embakasi gas explosion that killed three people.
In a joint statement, Cabinet Secretaries Kithure Kindiki and Davis Chirchir pointerd out that illegal gas filling stations will also be demolished.
“In order to sustain these compliance efforts, both the ministries of Energy and Petroleum and Interior and Administration of National Government are collaborating with EPRA to ensure that fresh risk assessment is undertaken for all LPG plants in the country with the view of closing all non-compliant sites,” the statement read.
The two ministries have further pledged to launch a public awareness program aiming to promote LPG safety and to reinforce the LPG data verification framework so as to improve accountability by stakeholders in the sector.
“The government shall hold nationwide LPG stakeholder workshops with a view to strengthening the policy and regulatory framework in the LPG sector,” it assured.
The ministries have however asserted that EPRA has in the past collaborated with different enforcement agencies and has managed to shutter 10 illegal sites in the recent past.
The two ministries have further assured that an investigation will be launched to investigate the gas explosion in Embakasi and prosecute anyone who will be held accountable
