NAIROBI, Kenya Oct 18 – A young family of four died on Thursday night after a landslide buried a section of their house in Elgeyo Marakwet as the heavy rains took a toll in most parts of the country.
Those killed are a couple and their two children, local authorities and residents said.
“We just woke up and realised that part of the house buried,” a local elder said, “we tried to access the house but it was too late to save them.”
The incident follows the death of four people whose vehicle was washed away by floods in Mwingi on Thursday, with many more incidents reported in various parts of the country with devastating effects.
In Mombasa, various parts were reported to be experiencing floods, including Bamburi area.
The government has warned of imminent floods and landslides in at least 22 counties where residents were urged to move to higher and safe grounds.
According to Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna, similar occurrences are likely to occur in parts of Northern Kenya, Coast, Nyanza, and Central Kenya, where heavy rains have been reported.
“We are advising people living in areas where it is raining currently to move to take precautions,” he said.
In case of a disaster, Oguna said, “there are sufficient early warning systems that are on the ground and able to provide information and advice on what should be done.”
