Garissa, Garsen, Hola on high alert as Kiambere dam overflows following heavy rains

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 14 – The Water Resources Authority (WRA) has urged residents along river Tana to move to higher grounds after Kiambere Dam overflowed following weeks of heavy rainfall.

The authority’s Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Shurie advised those living along River Tana especially from Danjere to kipini to relocate following the overflow to avoid loss of lives and property.

He stated that Sasumwa and Ruiru Dams are also overflowing.

“However there is no cause for alarm around these three dams as the rivers surrounding them are not full,” he stated.

He further pointed out that the Ndakaini Dam is at 96 per cent of its capacity and is expected to be on full capacity by the end of the month if the rains continue with the same intensity.

However there is no cause for alarm around these three dams as the rivers surrounding them are not full, Shurie stated.

The Kenya Metrological department in statement on Friday stated the rain will continue in January in some parts of the country.

Rainfall is likely to cease during the fourth week of December 2019 to first week of January 2020 in  Northern region counties of Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Turkana, and Samburu.

Approximately 330 people have been adversely affected ,17,000 people have been displaced while 132 people lost their lives in the past months due to flood-related emergencies.

The government in collaboration with other actors including Red Cross, World Food Programme and humanitarian agencies have been working to assist affected communities in the past months with food and non-food items.
