March 29 – India’s green energy transition has taken on a sharper geopolitical edge following a visit to New Delhi by Prime Minister Mark Carney and the unveiling of a new Strategic Energy Partnership between India and Canada.
The agreement positions both countries to deepen cooperation across solar, hydrogen, wind, low-carbon liquefied natural gas (LNG), and critical minerals, with ambitions to turn climate diplomacy into large-scale infrastructure development. Analysts say the partnership could become a model for North–South energy collaboration if effectively implemented.
India has committed to achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030, requiring the addition of about 40–50 GW annually—well above historical levels. The country has already surpassed 50 per cent non-fossil capacity, with more than 270 GW from renewables, marking significant progress amid rising electricity demand and rapid urbanisation.
The transition is driven not only by climate goals but also by economic and energy security considerations. Expanding renewable energy capacity is seen as key to reducing reliance on coal imports, curbing air pollution, and avoiding long-term risks associated with fossil fuel dependency.
The partnership announced during Carney’s visit includes cooperation in LNG, LPG, uranium, solar energy, hydrogen and critical minerals, supported by commercial agreements worth over CAD 5.5 billion. Canada has also committed to join the International Solar Alliance and upgrade its participation in the Global Biofuels Alliance, aligning itself with India-led clean energy initiatives.
A separate memorandum of understanding outlines collaboration in renewable energy technologies, storage, and grid expansion, to be coordinated through a Joint Working Group.
Canada is expected to leverage its strengths as a supplier of low-carbon LNG, uranium and critical minerals, while India offers one of the fastest-growing energy markets globally. Analysts note that the partnership reflects strong complementarity, but caution that its success will depend on how both sides manage trade-offs between energy security, affordability and sustainability.
