8 people killed in Makindu crash

NAIROBI, October 12 – At least eight people have been killed in a road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Sunday.

The accident that involved a minibus and a Nissan matatu occurred at Kavingulia about 3 kilometres from Wote town in Makueni district.

“Eight people died on the spot while 21 others have sustained serious injuries. It occurred when the two vehicles collided head on,” a senior police officer said.

“The two vehicles collided head on when the driver of the Nissan Matatu attempted to overtake another vehicle,” he added.

Kenya Red Cross official Titus Mungou said efforts were underway to airlift the injured passengers to hospitals in Nairobi for specialized treatment.

“They have all received first aid and are supposed to be airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment,” he said and added that many of them had sustained broken limbs.

Police said the accident occurred shortly before 1 pm.
