NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 15-The Supreme Council Of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has urged President Kenyatta to establish a technical team to steer the next phase of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
SUPKEM’s acting Chairperson Al-Hajj Hassan said there is need for an inclusive and participatory process.
He told a media briefing on Sunday that the next steps in the process require persons of high technical abilities and integrity.
Hassan argues that the task force members who formulated the report cannot review their set positions objectively, hence the need for a technical committee.
“The composition of the taskforce is compromised of state officers and public officers, who stand the potential conflict of interest. Their presence indicate a perceived lack of independence,” he said.
On the extension of the task force’s mandate, Hassan said it may “face legal landmines and legitimacy questions that may end up creating new fault lines in the country.”
SUPKEM is of the view that some of the BBI report recommendations on the governance structure may end up taking the country back to the single-party era of the imperial presidency.
“There are no tangible proposals on taming run-away corruption, there were no recommendations on improving the electoral system and ensuring electoral justice,” he said.
