NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 15 – Film Industry players have advocated for the need to create awareness against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) just 16 Days ahead of the Activism against Sexual and Gender Based violence campaign.
Cheryl Williams, Director of a film play “For colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf” in Kenya during an exclusive interview with Capital Fm News Desk, stated that SGBV is an ongoing global crisis that need to be faced head on by creating awareness as well as eliminating the stigma facing victims of SGBV.
“The issues highlighted in the Play deals with Sexual Gender Based Violence. Kenya has been addressing these issues and it’s now time to take action,“ said Cheryl Williams.
She added that victims of Sexual Gender Based violence need to be empowered for them to cope up with the stigma especially during their healing journey.
“Survivors of Sexual Gender Based Violence should know that they are no longer victims but victors. They overcame what they went through and it is important to tell those stories through film plays to spread hope and encouragement,” she stated.
The film plays “For colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf will be premiering later this Month even as Kenya joins the World to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.
The play, a piece of work inspired by actual life events of an American playwright and poet Ntozake whose real name was Paulette Williams consists of a series of poetic monologues accompanied by dance movements and music.
Cheryl Williams, the first American film director to direct the play in Kenya revealed that the play which has been around since 1976 is all inclusive and is mainly dedicated to highlighting issues affecting women which are prevalent in today’s digital era including rape and abortion cases.
Main Cast members of the play have been drawn from Kenya and Denmark.
The play will be performed in major cities in Kenya including Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa
